Nokia has officially unveiled its latest android-powered smartphone, the Nokia X, in Accra.
The launch in the country follows a global launch at the Mobile World Congress in the Spanish town of Barcelona, as well as similar events in other countries.
It thus makes it possible for dealers and retailers of Nokia-branded handsets to start stocking the device, which is Nokia’s latest smartphone, for onward retailing to the public.
Already, Medicom Ghana Limited, which is the sole distributor of Nokia handsets in the country, has started distributing the phone to interested dealers nation wide.
Its General Manager, Mr Arkhta Khan, said after the launch that the company had distributed about 5,000 pieces of the device in the weeks leading to the official launch.
“Our expectation is that the demand will be high because the response from the market has been positive,” Mr Khan said.
The Nokia X is a dual SIM device that is android compatible and comes with a tile-based user interface built similar to the Nokia Lumia. The Lumia is another brand of smartphones introduced by Nokia a year ago.
The Vice President of Nokia West and Central Africa, Mr Nick Imudia, was optimistic the stylish look and quality nature of the phone’s hardware would endear it to the millions of phone patrons nationwide.
“We believe this unique combination will resonate with consumers around the world and set a great precedent for the level of quality that can be achieved in the fast-growing, affordable smartphone segment,” he said.
Nokia is noted for producing quality phones with long-lasting battery yet at affordable prices.
Its latest device is built along those lines and is expected to be retailed at around GH¢400 nationwide.
As part of the launch, about 10 pieces of the phone were given out to participants after a raffle and quiz on the specifications of the device.
