The Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) has adopted the International Standard on Events Sustainability Management, ISO 20121 as a National Standard.

The adoption will facilitate effective event sustainability management for the local industry and also allow the industry in Ghana to adopt global trends in events management.

The national standard will specify the requirements of an event sustainability management system to improve the sustainability of events while recognising that events are sometimes, by their nature, high profile and transient, with both positive and negative social, economic and environmental impacts.

The new standard is applicable to all types and sizes of organisations involved in the design and delivery of events and accommodate diverse geographical, cultural and social conditions.

A statement issued by the Chairman of the Technical Committee (TC), who handled the adoption process, Mr Magnus Rex Danquah, said “a management system standard challenges an organisation to improve its process and thinking to lead to continual performance improvement and allows the organisation the flexibility to be more creative about the delivery of event-related activities without distracting from the aim of the event.”

He explained that “the National Standard is not a checklist or a reporting framework or a method of evaluating event sustainability performance; but to be applied flexibly and allow organisations that have not formally addressed sustainable development to start implementing an event sustainability management system.”

He further said that the final stage of the adoption as National Standard process, known as the publication stage, was the stage when the final document was gazetted in the national gazette through the Attorney-General’s Department, thereby making the standard a national legal document.

It will then submitted to the library for public use.

Members of the Technical Committee include Messrs. Edward Boateng, Kingsley Kwesi Hanson, George Abboah-Offei, Wisdom Quao-Deegbe, Dan Blagogee and Martin Ankrah.

The other members are Ms Mary Ruthmern, Ms Gladys A. De-Tarda, Mr Ernest Yankson, Mr Maxwell Dextler Ampofo, Mr Yaw Dua Osei, Ms Rita Mensah, Ms Abena Safoa Osei, and Mr James Amissah Hammond.
