He said workers are encouraged to give of their best only when their efforts are recognised and rewarded accordingly, adding that, any institution that does not recognise hard work is not worth working for.

Mr. Mensah was speaking at Tema during the best worker awards ceremony of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) at which 27 workers were honoured.

CHALLENGING YEAR

Mr Mensah, in a welcoming address delivered on behalf of the Director of the Port, Mr Richard Anamoo, commended the staff of GPHA for achieving successes in spite of what he termed “a very challenging year for Authority” and expressed the hope that the awards will spark the desire in others to work harder in the coming years and motivate them to give back to the authority whatever recognition being given to them..

He noted that, despite the dip in vessel traffic calling at the Tema port this year, the Authority was making some strides and urged the staff to continue to give off their best going into next year.

Mr. Mensah said management will continue to invest time and resources in the training, equipping and appreciating the employees and also position the staff to handle all types of vessels and expressed the hope that the coming year 2015 will be a much better year.

Port Training School

The General Manager in charge of Administration, Tema Port,  Mr Mike Griffin said mindful of the need to impart practical knowledge to personnel who will handle the day-to-day activities of the ports, the Tema Port was commencing a new Port Training Institute.

In view of that, Mr Griffin said the Tema Port Administration will soon relocate its offices to a new building to pave the way for the conversion of the old Tema Port Administration block into a state of the art training school to train the personnel.

TIDAL WAVE THREAT

The MP for Tema East, Mr Daniel Nii Kwatei Titus-Glover used the occasion to appeal to the management of GPHA to help the people of Tema Manhean to build a sea defence wall for the town.

He said tidal waves were consuming very important structures including fence walls of the Ghana Navy, the piece of land occupied by fish processors, the main bridge linking the people of Awudun as well as and the main cannal where the Chemu lagoon enters the sea that used to be far away from the sea.

The MP expressed worry that the delay in responding to the call could render the town and its environs a disaster area.

While commending the management of the GPHA for its contribution to the development of the country, the MP appealed to the workers to cooperate with management to increase productivity, stressing that “out of that, Management can do a lot for the company, Tema in particular and the country as a whole.”

The General Secretary of the Maritime and Dockworkers' Union (MDU), Mr Daniel Owusu Koranteng commended management for reviving the awards, and stressed that employee recognition is the most effective way of aligning the aspiration and interest of workers to the corporate values and goals.
