First Capital Plus Bank (FCP) has organised a three-day training workshop on risk management for its management and unit heads in Accra.
The workshop was made possible through the Cambridge Global Partners, a UK-based international strategy and business consultancy firm founded by a group of University of Cambridge alumni and associated world-class experts.
The objective of the training programme was to keep management abreast of contemporary issues in risk management and help deepen FCP’s integrated enterprise risk management approach as the bank gears up to become a pivotal player in Ghana’s banking industry and also position itself to go international in the medium to long term.
Speaking at the opening of the training programme, the Chief Executive Officer of FCP, Mr John Kofi Mensah, stated that there was the need for organisations to adopt a more objective, scientific and data-centred approach to risk management and treat risk management as enterprise-driven as opposed to department-driven.
According to him, traditionally, the concept of risk management has been seen as the sole preserve of the risk management department but risk is inherent in every facet of an organisation’s operations and so it is important for organisations to deploy sound enterprise-wide risk management strategies in order to maximise efficiency and effectiveness.
He also stressed that FCP’s focus was to become a benchmark for advanced risk management practice in Africa by deploying the most advanced contemporary global risk management models adapted to the complexities and peculiarities of the Ghanaian market.
The General Manager for Risk Management of FCP, Dr Charles Akuetteh, explained that as a new entrant in Ghana’s banking industry, FCP had had the complexities of its operations deepened and so there was the need for a more integrated, scientific and detailed company-wide risk management approach to decision-making in order to consistently deliver value to customers, staff and shareholders in general.
The training programme was facilitated by Dr Dayanand Pandey, an expert in Enterprise Risk Management.
