ECG inspects electrical wiring installations at Hohoe Market

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Volta Region, has commenced an exercise to inspect the electrical wiring installations at some markets in the Volta Region.

It forms part of efforts to prevent fire outbreak at market centres due to electrical faults.

In a release issued by the company, it said the exercise, which took place on July 26, saw officials of the ECG visit the Hohoe Market to educate the market women, check the electrical wiring at the market and conduct earth testing of installations at the market.

Addressing the Hohoe Market Women Association,the General Manager of ECG, Volta Region, Emmanuel Lumor, indicated that checking the wiring installation at the market was part of preventive efforts by the company to protect the market against fire outbreaks.

He said, “we have heard series of fire outbreaks in other regions in recent times due to electrical faults so we have taken the initiative of checking the electrical wiring at most markets in the region to identify and correct any potential hazard likely to cause any fire outbreak.”

He said the company cared about its customers and viewed the market women as strategic partners who needed education and support to protect their shops and goods against fire outbreak.

Mr Lumor asked the market women to be careful in all their dealings with electrical gadgets and also use electricity judiciously, adding “when you are not home, kindly turn off all your gadgets, don’t leave the iron on when you are not using it; try to iron in bulk, do not overload your socket with multiple equipment and avoid using exposed cables as connections to the socket.”

Stable power supply

He said the company was embarking on numerous system improvement projects to ensure stable power supply in both Volta and Oti regions, adding that “due to our commitment to making Volta Region the Hub of Excellent Customer Service, we are embarking on numerous projects to provide stable power supply to our cherished customers and ensure both existing and prospective customers such as industries access our services with much convenience.”

The projects included the construction of switching stations at Peki and Dzrakete, installation of VITs on the feeders, upgrading of portions of the Sokode-Matse Feeder to 33KV, expansion of the Asiekpe substation and the construction of a control room at the Kadjebi Bulk Supply Point (BSP).

The release said the market women were sensitised to the process to acquiring a metre at the ECG and advised to go through the right process when in need of a service from the ECG.

A representative of the Hohoe Market Women Association, Rebecca Titriku, thanked the ECG for the sensitisation and the free wiring inspection of the market and urged the ECG to hasten the decision to conduct similar exercise at other markets since the education will be very beneficial to all market women.
