Audit staff to train in financial auditing

Personnel of the Ghana Audit Service (GAS) in the country are to receive a comprehensive training programme in the area of financial auditing to ensure proper accountability in public institutions.

The six-month training programme will be implemented by Cowater International Limited (CIL).

The training which is sponsored by the Germany Development Bank (KFW) is expected to train 1000 GAS financial auditors within a three-phase session.

It is expected to begin on September 22, 2013 with the use of Financial Audit Manual to build the capacity of GAS.

The training will cover areas in computer assisted audit techniques (CAATs) software and CAATs audit procedures.

Addressing the kick-off meeting for the training programme in Accra, the Auditor General, Mr Richard Quartey, said the training would enable GAS to perform better audit report in the area of accountability and transparency.

He said the six-month training would help improve the economy base as most of the skills of the GAS staff would be enhanced.

He said GAS played a crucial role in monitoring the state and its public funds.

“We hope this training will build our capacity to avoid certain irregularities in financial auditing in order to protect the purse of the nation”, he said.

A deputy Auditor General, Mr Richard Akuamoah Asiedu, indicated that proper auditing on public institutions would enhance the economy of the state.

According to the Vice-President of CIL, Mr Michael Eastman, it was the aim of the German government to support Ghana’s national development in financial auditing.

He said additional funds from the government had been allocated to support GAS and other relevant agencies to further improve their services and capacity building in future.

He added that the introduction of CAATs would enable auditors to perform many tasks efficiently within the shortest possible time, thereby saving cost and energy.
