Sharks sign on Brazilian player

Elmina Sharks have signed on a Brazilian player, Abner Martins dos Santo Pinto, to help turn around their dwindling fortunes in the ongoing Ghana Premier League.

Sharks are currently among the bottom three clubs battling relegation  after 20 matches and need to up their game to avoid relegation.

The two-year contract has an option of extension, depending on the performance of the player.

Introducing the player to the media at Elmina yesterday, the General Secretary of Sharks, Mr Kelvin Aboagye, said, “we believe this signing is just one of many of such quality recruitment the club intends to embark on order to improve the competition within the playing body and football in Ghana as a whole.”

Abner has a vast footballing experience, having previously featured for clubs in Spain, Malta, Germany, France and Brazil.

He played for clubs such as Marsaxlokk FC, FC Sweikigi, Portomosense FC, Melita FC, Cadiz B and FC Renens

Mr Aboagye believes the 1.86m tall forward will immensely help solve the goal-scoring problem that has plagued the Elmina-based club so far this season.

Abner said at the press conference that his immediate motivation was to play for the club, saying “it is a big opportunity for me to come to Ghana to play football.”

He said the decision to join Sharks was taken with his manager, adding that he liked the challenge and was proud to don the jersey and do his best on the field.”

Abner, who was born in Marilia, a surburb of the Brazilian city of Sao Paulo, said the geographical conditions in his home country were similar to those prevailing in Ghana and pledged to adapt quickly to the local league in order to endear himself to Ghanaian football fans.
