I’ll revive all sporting disciplines - Prez Akufo-Addo

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo says his quest to help revive other sporting disciplines in the country, aside from football, was as a result of seeing himself grow up as an amateur boxer, footballer and a cricketer.

President Akufo-Addo, who was speaking at the launch of this year's GNPC Ghana's Fastest Human at the Adidas House in Accra last Tuesday, said that motivates him enough to help in reviving the dwindling fortunes of the various sporting disciplines in the country.

The GNPC-sponsored Ghana’s Fastest Human is a sprint event aimed at unearthing talents to restore Ghana to its glorious past in the 100m within seven years from its inception in 2013.

This year's competition is scheduled to commence in Takoradi tomorrow with the regional qualifiers which will continue on May 27 in Tamale, Kumasi on June 17, July 22 in Accra, before the final on September 16 in Kumasi.

Speaking at the launch, President Akufo-Addo said: "I was impressed by their visit to me at the Presidency and the quest to promote the sports in the country so I decided to support it".

"My government is committed to this initiative because football is not the only sport in the country and I will present eight autographed trophies to be presented to the winners.

"Recounting my days as an amateur boxer, footballer and a cricketer, I feel there are more to be done in reviving sports in the country and not only football," he added.

The Minister of Youth and Sports, Isaac Asiamah, expressed government's commitment to give athletics and other sporting disciplines a boost under his leadership to create more heroes and help in job creation, as well as prevent crime.

Reks Brobby, the brain behind the competition, during his address thanked the President for gracing the occasion and pledged his commitment to see the championship achieve greater heights.

He said the presence of President Akufo-Addo proved the event's worth, especially as the search for a future sprint king continues.
