Baba to be honoured today

A Renowned sports educationist and handball lecturer at the University of Education Winneba (UEW), Dr Jatong Ahmed Baba, will be honoured today with some handball gala matches at the university handball court at Winneba in the Central Region.

Dr Baba, who heads the Health Physical Education Recreation and Sports Department at UCEW, is renowned for popularising handball in the early 1970s till date.

A native of Nalerigu in the Northern Region, the 56-year-old is one of the pioneer players given scholarship in 1977 to pursue studies in Physical Education and sports in Bucharest, Romania where he trained as a handball coach. He returned to Ghana in 1983 to become the national handball coach until 1986 when he was nominated to serve on the Board of the Handball Association of Ghana (HAG). 

He has trained and mentored some of the sport’s heavyweights today, including the current national coach George Bankole, international referees’ instructor Charles Mensah and Saka Acquaye, the Ashanti Regional Director of the National Sports Authority.
