G/A Sports Directorate gives GH¢5,835 to NSA

The Sports Director of Greater Accra, Mr Kwame Amponfi Jnr, says the provision of adequate funds for sports promotion and development is necesary if the nation is to thrive in that field.

He also noted that the establishment of sporting facilities and training centres like the Azumah Nelson Sports Complex was vital for sports development.

Mr Amponfi disclosed that his outfit had for the first time paid an internally generated funds (IGF) of GH¢5,835.10 to the National Sports Authority.

To achieve sports development, Mr Julius Debrah, the Greater Accra Regional Minister, has tasked the various sporting associations to rebrand to attract sponsors to support their activities.

He entreated the sporting associations to seek sponsorship from corporate entities and leverage them by patronising their products during games.

Those remarks were made at the Second Staff and Stakeholders Awards ceremony organised by the Greater Accra Regional Sports Authority at the Media Centre of the Accra Stadium yesterday.

The awards saw Edmund Appiah, a senior administrative officer, win the overall best worker award and receive a certificate of merit, a citation and a cash prize of GH¢400.

The most dedicated and disciplined regional coach of 2013 award went to Edmund Kwame Kpeglo, a senior basketball coach, who received GH¢200, a certificate of merit and a citation.

 An assistant handball coach, Emmanuel Osabutey, was adjudged the most innovative regional coach for 2013 and got GH¢200, a certificate and a citation.

Two coaches earned the best regional coach awards for 2013. They were Henry Quansah, an assistant tennis coach, and Salim Amuzuloh, a rugby trainer. 

They both received GH¢200 each, a certificate and citation.

Mr Fred Owusu, head labourer, received the best labourer award while Hajia Zenabu Akoto, a tennis coach, was adjudged the best metropolitan/municipal and district sports director.

A paralympian, Maclean Atsu, was adjudged the overall best regional paralympic athlete, while Isaac Nortey won tennis, with Sulemana Tetteh winning the best amateur boxing award.

Former national taekwondo star and president of the Norlympics Taekwondo Academy, Norbert Amefu, received a special award and a citation for nurturing and growing the game from the grass roots and his immense contribution towards the development of taekwondo among the youth in the region.

Others include Patrick Nortey Dowuona, for best regional sports association chairperson in handball, Paul Atchoe for volleyball, Frank Awuku for hockey and Christopher Amankrah for athletics.

The rest are Wilfred Osei Palmer for his contribution towards the maintenance of Tema Sports Stadium, Ahmed Gambo and Ahmed Nkrumah of Amidaus Professionals, as well as Inter Allies’ Rabeh El-Eter, Omar El-Eter and Delali Eric Senaye, for their contribution towards the development of the Tema Sports Stadium.

The overall best athletes awards went to Juliana Arkoh for weightlifting, Augustine Agbozo for taekwondo and Martha Korroe Bavon for volleyball.

Madam Alice Attipoe, Acting Director General of the National Sports Authority, entreated staff to work harder to contribute meaningfully to sports development in the country.
