Most of the patients were suffering from advanced stages of hernia and fibroid that needed surgeries to correct them.

The free medical outreach programme, which took place last Friday, formed part of activities marking this year’s Suncityfest to celebrate customers and the people of the region.

The medical team, headed by Prof. Stephen Tabiri, a Consultant Surgeon with the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) had members  drawn from other the major health facilities in the country including the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, the Seventh Day Adventist Church and specialists like Dr Appiah Kubi and Dr Eric Owusu among others.

Aside the free surgery, the team also conducted a free medical screening for residents of Kwatiri.

In all, more than 400 residents benefited from the free health screening exercise

The beneficiaries were drawn mainly from Kwatiri and its surrounding villages.

Explaining the rationale of the exercise, Mr Peter Bimpeh, Commercial Manager of MTN-Northern Business District, said it was to show appreciation to the people of Kwatiri and the region in general, for their loyalty with the company.

He said it was also to come to the aid of those needing immediate medical attention for the conditions but were unable to do so due to financial constraints.

Mr Bimpeh was grateful to team of doctors for partnering with MTN to bring relief to the people.

He said if the patients were to foot the treatment for their ailments, it would cost the patients between GHC 700.00 and GHC 1,200.00 at the Hospital.

He said the company would continue to invest in the health of the people since “it is only healthy people who can contribute to the development of the country.”

According to him, the team chose the Kwatiri polyclinic to showcase the facility at the centre to the people and to educate them on the need to patronise the services of the polyclinic instead of travelling long distances to Sunyani.

A 16-year old Kwasi Tawiah, who has had to deal hernia for four years, was full of praise for the company for coming to his aid and helping to overcome his medical challenge

He said because of his condition, he was inhibited in playing with his friends and was happy that now that the condition has been corrected, he would regain his normal life.

For 36-year old farmer, Madam Akua Wusuwaa she would no more be laughing stock of her village. She said her fibroid made her look like a pregnant woman and had to endure the public ridicule.
