Work on first community day SHS in VR starts

Work on the first community day senior high school (SHS) in the Volta Region has started at Chinderi in the Krachi Nchumuru District. The outgoing Volta Regional Minister, Mr Joseph Nii Laryea Afotey-Agbo, cut the sod for the commencement of work.

The project is part of the first batch of 50 of the proposed 200 new community day SHSs to be constructed in different parts of the country.

The Chinderi SHS is to help provide access to SHS for the huge number of basic school graduates in the district and also increase the literacy level among the people.

The Volta Region will benefit from four of the 50 schools earmarked for construction country-wide.

Address

Speaking at the sod-cutting ceremony, Mr Afotey-Agbo, on behalf of the President, stated that the siting of the school was a great advantage for the district to move forward socially and economically.

He said the Krachi-Nchumuru District was chosen because it was one of the newly established districts which did not have good second cycle institutions.

Relief to the people

The District Chief Executive for the area, Mr Solomon Kuyon, on behalf of the people, thanked the government for the project, stating that the construction of the school was a relief to parents who had to end the education of their children because they could not afford the high cost of boarding fees in faraway places.

The resultant effect of the absence of a senior high school in the area, Mr Kuyon said, had been abject poverty, early marriages and increase in rural-urban drift for non-existing jobs.

The Member of Parliament for the Krachi Nchumuru Constituency, Mr John Majisi, tasked schoolchildren to study hard to be able to get good grades for the continuation of their education to the senior high and tertiary levels.

The Chief of the Bejamse Traditional Area, Nana Obrimpong Kanya II, also appealed to the government to tar the road from Dambai to Krachi and from Borae to Banda to bring progress to the area and save lives.
