Bebuso R/C JHS appeals for computers

It was a life-changing experience for 12 final-year students of the Bebuso R/C JHS in the Kwahu South District in the Eastern Region  when they had the opportunity to hold a computer mouse for the first time.

This was when they had the opportunity to share a classroom with their counterparts from Mary Mother of Good Counsel School in Accra for a week.

At the computer laboratory, the 12 were paired with their counterparts to enable the 12 to understudy their counterparts.

Until then, these students were only taught ICT theoretically with no practical experience. They had only seen photographs of computers and accessories in the ICT textbook.

This is particularly serious as such students have to compete with their counterparts from well-endowed schools in the cities for laurels in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

It was, therefore, an unforgettable experience for the final-year students when they had the opportunity to share a classroom with their counterparts from Mary Mother school.

Experience

Joyce Tomey, one of the students, narrating her experience of having the feel of a mouse of a computer, said, “Until this week, I had never seen a computer before, not to talk of using it. At best I saw photographs of computers,” she told the Daily Graphic after a familiarisation visit to the Graphic Communications Group Ltd in Accra.

Richard Sakpatey, also a form three student of the school, sharing his experience, described the visit to Accra as an unforgettable experience, since it gave him the opportunity to see, feel and touch a computer.

Appeal

The plight of the students goes beyond the absence of computers to lack of electricity in the whole of Bebuso, such that even if there were computers, the school would have to get solar panels to power the computers.

Having seen what they are missing in their school, and for that matter their part of the country, the students appealed for support to equip the school with computers to help their mates to also have a feel of the computer.

They further pleaded for solar panels to help power the computers, “to enable students from that school to also be able to compete favourably with others anywhere in the country”.

Gratitude

The students expressed their profound gratitude to the Parish Priest of the St Theresa’s Parish at Samanshyia in the Kwahu South District in the Eastern Region, Rev. Fr Stephen Sakpaku, who arranged for the one-week visit to Accra for them to interact with their counterparts at the Mary Mother of Good Counsel School.
