Central Region teachers receive laptops

Teachers selected from various districts in the Central Region have been presented with a  total of 2,331 laptops as part of the government’s commitment to promote Information and Communication Technology (ICT) education in the country.

The teachers were selected to undergo training from December 2012 to March 2013 in order to help them to effectively teach the subject in their schools.

The first batch of 931 laptops were presented to the teachers last year.

At a ceremony to present the last batch of 1,400 laptops to the teachers in Cape Coast on Tuesday, the outgoing Central Regional Minister, Mr Samuel Sarpong, noted that the rationale for the training last year was to equip teachers with the requisite ICT knowledge in order to facilitate the transfer of such knowledge to their students.

He said the government placed premium on ICT education due to the integral role it played in the changing world, adding that “computer literacy in the job market now constitutes an essential driving force that determines the chances of one getting employment.”

He entreated the beneficiary teachers to make good use of the laptops.

The Central Regional Education Director, Mr Joseph Dagor Kor, said teachers should adapt to the 21st Century teaching methods, stressing that society demanded more from the teachers and, therefore, implored them to be alive to their duties.

Mr Dagor Kor stressed that the laptops should motivate the teachers to give their best.

He said the region would not tolerate teacher absenteeism, and that all those found guilty would face sanctions from the Ghana Education Service (GES).

He added that as part of measures to tackle the issue of teacher absenteeism in the region, the names of some absentee teachers had been presented to the Controller and Account General’s Department for deductions from their salaries to be effected.

Mr Dagor Kor further urged the teachers to co-operate with the government to make the planned transfer exercise a success to ensure effective teaching and learning in all areas.
