‘Technical/Vocational education provides enormous opportunities’

The Director of the National Vocational Training Institute (NVTI), Mr Stephen Amposah, has impressed on the youth to embrace technical and vocational training.

He stated that technical and vocational training offered enormous opportunities by making people self-employed and well-equipped for the job market.

“It is time we stopped looking down on technical and vocational training, without considering the opportunities they offer,” he said.

Mr Amposah, who made the call during the fifth Toyota National Technical Skills Contest in Accra, said vocational and technical training was equivalent to university training and was equally relevant for national development.

The annual competition aims at helping to develop the skills and proficiency of the technicians and spare parts advisors, as well as teach them the benefits of conducting regular checks on vehicles.

Technical/vocational education

Mr Amponsah said it was unfortunate that most Ghanaian parents and guardians discouraged the youth from pursuing technical and vocational courses.

“Many people are still obsessed with the idea that all our young people should go to the university but what they forget is that there is equal prestige in vocational and technical skills,” he emphasised.

Mr Amponsah pointed out that it was impossible for all the youth to go to the university and called on them to consider technical and vocational institutes as a good option.

Toyota skills contest

Mr Amponsah commended the initiative taken by Toyota Ghana and called on other automobile companies in the country to help the industry to move to a greater height.

“This initiative is worth emulating by other automobile companies, especially if they have any respect for technical skills and its enhancement,” he said.

The outgoing Managing Director of Toyota Ghana, Mr Takahiko Takabayashi, said the objective of the contest was to improve the skills and proficiency of the technicians and parts advisors.

“After five years of this contest, our technicians and advisors are geared and striving for excellence and pride in their chosen occupations as we strengthen our after-sales service support to our customers.”

“We are in Ghana to serve the interest of the citizenry, especially our customers,” the CEO added.

Awards ceremony

At the end of the contest, 12 workers of Toyota Ghana were presented with certificates and other awards. While some were presented with laptops, citations and home theatres, others would also be sponsored to represent the company at the Customer Service Champions Assembly in Japan this year.
