Mr Buanya noted that ICT was the vehicle to education and the country’s development, adding that the partnership between the school and the Ghana Telecom University College was a step in the right direction.

Staff and students

O’Reilly SHS has a student population of 1,000, comprising 483 boys and 517 girls. It also has a staff strength of 101 made up of 62 teaching and 39 non-teaching personnel.

Relocation

According to the headmistress of the school, Mrs Mary Adu-Gyamfi, “the 2012-2013 academic year was a historical year. We crossed a very important milestone, which is our relocation to a permanent site...It was a distant dream, today it is a reality.” She said with the help of God, the school accomplished an important mission that year.

Mrs Adu-Gyamfi commended the staff for the efforts and sacrifices they had made, adding that they were sincere in their quest to promote excellent education.

She, however, said the school’s relocation had affected its enrolment due to the distance and the fact that most Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidates who chose the school did not know that they had moved from Adabraka to Teshie Okpoi-Gonno.

Academic performance

She said in 2013, the school presented 337 candidates for the West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE); all of whom performed creditably, with the overall best candidate, Maame Aba Wilmot, scoring seven As and one B2.

Exploring ICT

The President of the Ghana Telecom University College (GTUC), Dr Osei Darkwa, said the country would not be able to achieve excellence in education without exploring the value of ICT.

“Our educational institutions will not be able to meet the country’s increasing demand for education if we do not overhaul the current system,” he said.
