Classrooms of Prempeh College ripped off

The roof of the main 18-unit classroom block accommodating a total of over 1,000 students at the Prempeh College was ripped off during a heavy rainfall in Kumasi at the weekend.

Freeman House, one of the  oldest dormitories, was also affected.

The rainstorm, which started at about 6.30 p.m. on Saturday, also destroyed electrical wires leaving part of the school in darkness. 

The headmaster of the school, Mr E.K. Yeboah, who took the Daily Graphic round, said though there were no casualties, the damage was extensive and appealed for emergency assistance to re-roof the block for normal teaching and learning to continue in the school. 

He said property affected could run into several millions of cedis and disclosed that the structural engineer of the Architectural Engineering Services Limited (AESL) had visited the school to acquaint himself with the damage.

Mr Yeboah said an emergency meeting was convened with the  AESL, the Ghana Education Service (GES) and other stakeholders on Monday at the school to discuss the way forward.

The headmaster disclosed that it was the second disaster the school had suffered since it was established in 1949.
