The Mampong Technical College of Education is considering admitting female students to the college soon in line with its vision of promoting gender parity in education.

Formerly Mampong Technical Training College, it is the only all-male college of education in Ghana and the decision is part of a 10-year development plan of the college, to attract about 200 females as the first batch.

The Principal of the college, Rev. Dr Victor Nyuieko Abotri, made this known at the eighth graduation ceremony at the college’s campus at Mampong in the Ashanti Region.

Currently, the college has a student population of 1,460, and the principal assured that accommodation for the incoming female students would not be a problem.

He said management was working to expand infrastructure so as to accommodate more female students when the plan materialised.

Modern facilities

He said technical education had become more practical than theoretical and it was necessary to acquire modern facilities to support a friendly technical education environment.

He noted that most of the institution’s technical facilities were obsolete, and management was spending part of its internally generated funds (IGF) to acquire new machines and tools to assist technical education.

According to Rev. Dr Abotri, the college had already collaborated with TATA Africa for support in the area of organising  workshops for students to keep them abreast of modern technical education.

He said the government had demonstrated its commitment to evidence-based vocational and technical training following the transformation of polytechnics to technical universities in the country and stressed the need for the government to give technical education all the needed attention and also come to the aid of the college, in particular.

Graduates

The principal congratulated the graduates on making it through their three-year journey as teacher trainees, and asked them to be role models to their students in the various places they would be posted to teach.

He asked them not only to concentrate on teaching but also explore various ways of improving on technical education.

Five of the graduating students obtained First Class, 53 Second Class Upper, 94 Second Lower, 52 Third Class and 11 Pass.
