The two-day exhibition, which attracted a number of second cycle students within the Greater Accra Region and other prospective applicants of the school, afforded students interested in pursuing their university education the opportunity to explore avenues of gaining admission to the school.

The university, ranked among the 100 best universities for engineering globally in 2014, has 34,000 students, 3,810 faculty members, and admits more than 200 international students each year.

It runs degree, master’s and doctoral programmes, and also offers Chinese programme for international students interested in learning the Chinese language and culture.

Partnership

Opening the exhibition, the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Madam Sun Baohong, said the exhibition reflected the tremendous progress of education in China.

She announced that the University of Cape Coast would set up a Confucian Institute making it the second tertiary institution in the country to have had such a centre, after the Regional Maritime University in Accra, which is collaborating with a Chinese university to offer a degree programme.

Madam Baohong said it was refreshing to note that 4,500 Ghanaian students were pursuing various levels of higher education in China, placing Ghana on top of the table of Africans studying in that country.

She said currently, more than 150 Ghanaians were pursuing various programmes in the UESTC, while 87 had so far graduated and had returned to the country to offer their services towards the development of the country.

Madam Baohong said her wish was that many more Ghanaians would access higher education in China.

Opportunities

The Director in charge of Tertiary Education at the Ministry of Education, Mrs Wilhemina Asamoah, said such an exhibition helped open avenues to Ghanaian students to explore the opportunities available around the world.

She said the ministry was aware of the good reputation of UESTC and indicated that the event was an opportunity for Ghanaian students to learn more about the university.

Mrs Asamoah announced the collaboration between the UESTC and 11 of Ghana’s tertiary institutions.

She said the goal of the ministry was increased equitable access to high-quality tertiary education, adding that with the ministry’s interventions targeting access, enrolment had increased by 13 per cent for the universities, 3.0 per cent for the polytechnics and 15.8 for the colleges of education.

A similar exhibition would be held in Winneba in the Central Region.

MOU

The university later signed memorandum of understanding with some tertiary institutions in the country to collaborate in a number of areas.

The institutions include the Tamale, Ho and Sunyani polytechnics, and the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA).
