Louisa Brookshire heads department at Telecom Varsity

Eight years have passed since the Ghana Telecom Training School was upgraded into a university that is now known as the Ghana Technology University College (GTUC).  Since August 15, 2006 when former President Kufuor inaugurated the institution, the GTUC has been preserving the trail by providing virtual and online educational programmes to thousands of undergraduates and graduates across Africa.

As it stands now, technology is the bane of our society so GTUC would like to leave a huge footprint on the path to success in today’s era of cutting-edge technology.

Taking inspiration from these achievements, Ms Maria Louisa Brookshire, (nee Blay-Miezah), who assumed the position of Head of Department, Institutional Advancement at the GTUC last year, decided to take up her next professional challenge in the business world, at the college.

Professional satisfaction

Today, she has reached the pinnacle of satisfaction in her professional endeavours because she is passionate about the financial and overall objectives of the GTUC.

She is presently spearheading a media campaign that will allow corporations in Ghana and across the globe to do one of four things: Set up scholarship foundations for needy students, donate funds to the GTUC, pledge money towards the institution's endowment fund or collaborate on corporate social responsibility initiatives.

She has worked for MBNA America Bank (now Bank of America) and BellSouth Mobility/Cingular Wireless (now AT&T Mobility), General Electric, Delphi Corporation Wolters Kluwer (Bear Stearns Office on Wall Street), and Coca Cola. She has also worked as the Head of Advertising of GLO Mobile Ghana Ltd.

At the age of 32, she became the youngest and only female to be named the Chief Marketing Officer at Uganda Telecom, a Lap Green telecommunication conglomerate in Uganda, East Africa. She continues to work as a Marketing Consultant to troubled multi-national firms in Europe, the Middle-East and Sub-Saharan Africa and has endeavoured to create innovative solutions that allow telecom businesses to utilise online channels of distribution to maximise revenue.

Creative ingenuity

Through creative ingenuity, entrepreneurial vision and solid marketing strategies, she simultaneously launched two companies in 2006 while working on her Six Sigma Certification from GE; (a) SkyeRaine XChange (SRX), a Global Career Placement and Human Resources Consultancy and (b) Kulture Shock Productions (KSP), a subsidiary company specialising in Urban Entertainment and Events Planning in the United States.

Ms Brookshire, formerly known as Mona Lisa (ML) Brookshire, attended Wesley Girls' High School in Ghana for her ‘O’ Levels;  Achimota Secondary School for her ‘A’ Level and continued her education at Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia with full academic scholarship for her undergraduate degree. She acquired a Master of Business Administration when she graduated as a "Whirlpool Journey to Excellence Scholar" from Clark Atlanta University's Master of Business Administration programme in 2005 (also on full academic scholarship).

In 2008, she was documented as one of the first Ghanaian-American females to be featured in EBONY magazine for her career achievements as a marketer. She was featured in Canoe Quarterly Magazine, Business Week, Silo Breaker, Mobile News, Technology Digital e-Columns, Green Telecom Publications, Golf 100 Magazine, Energy Harvesting Journal, Reader's Digest, MENSA USA Publications, African Business News, Marketing Africa Magazine, African Woman Magazine, on CNBC Africa and other international TV, radio and print media.

Recognition

She has been recognised by other publications and international organisations including MENSA, (an organisation for individuals with high IQs).

She is passionate about the GTUC, which used to be Ghana Telecom University College, which is committed to being the centre of academic excellence for the new generation of students.

Ms Brookshire  says she is ready to answer any questions on the business objectives of the GTUC. She can be contacted on:  +233 202 625 774 and/or [email protected]., [email protected] or [email protected]
