President John Dramani Mahama has pledged to assist members of the University of Ghana Alumni Association to complete the construction of a Faculty of Arts building for their alma mater.

The Faculty of Arts structure is one of three projects currently being jointly undertaken by the association and the university.

The other projects are an eye clinic to serve the Legon community and a mother’s wing at the Legon Hospital to cater for mothers whose children go on admission.

President Mahama, who is an alumnus of the university, gave the assurance when he delivered a speech as the guest of honour at the alumni association’s 65th anniversary fund-raising ball at the State Banquet Hall in Accra last Saturday.

He said he would play a role in sourcing for funds to complete the Faculty of Arts project.

The Chairman of the University of Ghana Alumni Association, Mr Paa Kwesi Yankey, urged all alumni of the university to register with the association and contribute to ongoing projects being undertaken.

While congratulating the university’s administration and the student body on achievements such as the successful launch of a Readers series — the single largest publications initiative of any African university — in December last year, Mr Yankey said such feats had catapulted the university to greater heights.

He stated that the university was currently ranked as the nation’s leading centre of higher education, number two in the West African sub-region and the 19th top institution of higher learning in Africa.

Contribution of alumni

In his goodwill message to the alumni association, Professor Justice S. K. Date-Bah, the Chairman of the Council of the University of Ghana, encouraged the members of the association to contribute to the well-being of the university as a way of appreciating its contribution to their successes.

“The University of Ghana has contributed considerably to the success of many of its alumni and alumnae and it is only fitting that these distinguished graduates endeavour to give something back to their alma mater,” he said.

Prof Justice Date-Bah also lauded members of the association for serving as honest brokers in some delicate matters that required resolution between the university administration and the students.

Two financial institutions, Cal Bank and Access Bank, presented cheques for GH¢25,000 each to the association.

Special awards were presented to sponsors of the association’s activities, as well as the ball, including a posthumous one to the late President John Evans Atta Mills.

Corporate institutions that received awards included Ecobank, the UT Bank, the Ghana Reinsurance Company and the Ghana Airports Company Ltd.
