The scholarships cover 100 per cent tuition fees for all beneficiaries and accommodation for some of the beneficiaries.

Speaking at a brief ceremony to present the scholarships to the students in Accra, the Lebanese Ambassador to Ghana, Mr Ali Halabi, said the gesture was also to help improve the development of education in the country.

The beneficiaries

The beneficiaries include Ms Emma Aku Obiri, Mr  Richard Mawutor Dzikunu, Ms Eugenia Akorfa Kumi, Mr Jefferey  Owuraku Sarpong, Mr Manesseh Sugarhtan Annor, Mr  Sheriff Appiah, Ms Leonora Amakuor Akpey, Ms Tryphena Lizzert Odekye Yeboah and Mr Edwin Kwakofi.

Mr Halabi said the scholarship scheme was initiated by the Lebanese community in Ghana in 2013 in appreciation of Ghanaians’ offer of hospitality to Lebanese migrants who came into the country in the second half of the 19th century, which offered them the opportunity to contribute their quota to the country’s development.

He said the beneficiaries of the scheme would be extended to students of other public tertiary institutions such as the University of Ghana, Legon, and the Kwame Nkrumah University Of Science And Technology, Kumasi.

Rector’s response

In his response, the Rector of the GIJ, Dr Wilberforce Dzisah, expressed the institute’s appreciation to the Lebanese community, particularly for including students from the institute.

He urged other organisations and institutions to emulate the example of the Lebanese community in Ghana and invest in the education of students, especially those in the communication field.

Dr Dzisah advised the beneficiaries to take their studies very seriously and be committed to excellence.

“Getting the scholarship is not enough, you need to study hard to maintain it and become role models for other students, ” he said.

The beneficiaries expressed their gratitude to the Lebanese community and the institute for the support and promised to make optimum use of the opportunity.
