The Korle Bu Nurses Training College is to begin a Bachelor of Science (BSc) certification programme by June 2016.

This forms part of the upgrading of all accredited nursing and midwifery training colleges into degree-awarding institutions. The School of Peri-Operative and Critical Care Nursing and the Ophthalmic Nursing School at Korle Bu will also be awarding BSc degrees.

The Public Relations Officer at the Ministry of Health, Mr Tony Goodman, made this known in an interview with the Daily Graphic in Accra last Tuesday and said the move was to help improve on nursing certification and enhance professionalism in the industry.

There are 80 accredited public and seven private nursing institutions across the country that are in the process of getting affiliated to various universities, including the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), the Cape Coast University and the University of Health and Allied Sciences, and would be offering first degree programmes.

Mr Goodman said the Ministry of Health had set up the Health Training Institutions secretariat to oversee the activities of institutions that were accredited by the National Accreditation Board with the Nurses and Midwifery Council (NMC) and to regulate their activities, curriculum and examination.

Caution

He cautioned students and parents to deal with only accredited institutions, as some private nursing schools were not regulated by the council.

He said with the introduction of the BSc degree certification programmes, only students from accredited institutions would be employed by government health facilities.

He added that before the introduction of the BSc programmes, the University of Ghana awarded Diploma in Nursing certificates after students from the institution had successfully completed a three-year nursing training programme.
