Achimota School old students to build dining hall

The 1966/67 Year Group of the Achimota School has performed a sod-cutting ceremony for the construction of an ultra-modern dining hall facility for the school at a cost of about US$1.5 million (GH¢5.7 million).

The 2,000-seater project is the group’s contribution to the development of their alma mater and is expected to be completed in March next year.

The President of the Year Group, Mr Samuel Appiah-Ampofo, said at the ceremony that the group intended to raise funds from its own coffers and from other corporate bodies to complete the project.

According to him, the year group had a number of well-accomplished personalities such as former President Jerry John Rawlings and his wife, Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings, and others, who were ready and eager to support the project.

Established tradition

“The public knows we are celebrating the 50th anniversary of the end of five years of studentship at this school. This project follows the tradition that on such occasions, the celebrating year group donates something of value to the school. All of us here acknowledge that we were, by and large, shaped as individuals by this institution, that in many cases our careers have been directed or influenced by the fact that we were students here and by the relationships built,” Mr Appiah-Ampofo said

He added that in building the facility, the group did not regard itself as doing the school a favour but rather seeking to give something to its alma mater and that the association was inspired by the initiative of the 1965 Year Group, which had built a modern kitchen facility for the school.

“We decided to follow their example and raise the standard and magnitude of the 50th anniversary projects and even higher. We hope they will complete their project in time so that ours can be properly joined with theirs as a single kitchen and dining hall complex,” he said.

He urged members of the year group and other corporate bodies to support the project to ensure its smooth completion on the scheduled duration.

Appreciation

The Headmistress of the Achimota School, Mrs Beatrice Adom, expressed gratitude to individuals who had supported the school in various ways over the years.

According to her, the project would go a long way to help the school address the infrastructural challenges it was presently facing.

“Many year groups have come to the aid of the school to either rehabilitate some of the old and dilapidated buildings or have provided equipment for the students,” she said.

She warned encroachers on the Achimota School land to desist from such acts in order to pave the way for the school to develop its lands to enhance academic activities.
