They are Falsyd Foundation School, Achimota; Redeemer Preparatory School, Dzorwulu; Immaculate Heart R/C Basic School, Christian Village, and Trinity Academy, Dome Pillar ‘2’.

The competition, which is being organised by the Graphic Communications Group Limited (GCGL), is sponsored by ECOBANK, MoneyGram, Ghana Book Trust, Magic Malt and the Ghana Book Publishers Association.

Launching the event, the Strategy Manager, GCGL, Mr John Tagoe, who deputised for the Managing Director, Mr Ken Ashigbey, said it was important for children to build their lexicon in order to become great men and women in the future.

He said it was important for the Junior Graphic and ECOBANK to organise the spelling competition in support of the country’s quest to develop its human talents.

Spelling is important for children

The acting Editor of the Junior Graphic, Mr Vance Azu, said spelling competitions helped students to improve their vocabulary and comprehension.

According to Mr Azu, the goal of the Junior Graphic is to enable every student to spell, read and write well.

“Students are also able to cement the connection between the letters and their sounds, as well as improve their reading and writing skills,’’ he added.

He gave an assurance that Junior Graphic was committed to students, and added that the paper would continue to provide schoolchildren with the tools to learn and communicate fluently throughout their education and also in their adult lives.

The Competition

Highlighting on the activities for the competition, Mr Azu stated that the competition would take place across the country and the first phase (which is the preliminary or group stage) would entail fan clubs in every region contesting among themselves so that “the winner will then qualify for the next level of the competition.”

The next phase, he said, would be the knock-out phase where the winners and first runners-up would qualify to participate in the final stage.

Addressing the gathering, the Branch Manager of ECOBANK - McCarthy Hill Division, Mr Mark Adjei, encouraged the students to cultivate the habit of saving.

He said it was important for children to start saving rather than spending extravagantly.

After the launch, Falsyd Foundation School, Redeemer Preparatory School, Immaculate Heart R/C Basic School and Trinity Academy set the pace for the competition.

At the end of the competition, Falsdy Foundation School won with 65 points. Trinity Academy placed second with 47 points. Redeemer Preparatory School was third with 36 and Immaculate Heart R/C Basic School placed fourth with 25 points.

Falsyd Foundation will thus move on to the next stage of the competition.

Participants were given prizes.
