GSTS Alumni donates furniture to school
The old boys of the Ghana Secondary Technical School (GSTS) have donated 50 sets of furniture and two sets of jerseys to the school.

The 1985-1990 alumni, popularly called the ‘‘Giants’’ made the donation at a ceremony at the school as part of its silver jubilee celebration.
The furniture was designed by one of their members and would be used by teachers in the various classrooms.
Before the presentation, the first of its kind by a year group of the school, the old students joined the current students at the dining hall for the Friday morning breakfast of rice water without bread after which the students assembled at the school’s assembly hall where the old students interacted with them.
The visibly happy past students recalled some fond memories during their days in school, teased one another, laughed heartily and embraced one another for having seen, some, for the first time in about three decades.
Mr Alfred Ekow Gyan, the Deputy Western Regional Minister, who is an alumnus, in an address, commended the old students for their foresight and deep sense of understanding of education issues.
‘‘Indeed, what you have done today is a way of acknowledging what this great school has done for you in shaping your lives,’’ he stressed.
Mr Gyan noted that in spite of the challenges and setbacks, it was gratifying to note the significant role GSTS had played and continued to play in the development of the nation’s human resource base as evidenced in the array of scholarly and professional personalities it had produced, some of whom had gathered to savour and share in the glory of their alma mater.
The deputy regional minister said, ‘‘It is about 30 years ago that the old Giants of 1985-1990 group entered GSTS and to commemorate this enviable feat, the group deems it prudent to donate these sets of furniture for teachers in all the classrooms as a way of giving back to their alma mater.’’
Poverty alleviation
He reiterated the government’s commitment in making the development of education the main thrust of its strategic policy of alleviating poverty, while improving the quality of lives of the citizenry, adding that the government would ensure that the institutional structures were strengthened and that there was effective and efficient management ,as well as financing of education in the country.
He, however, stressed the fact that as was the case the world over, governments alone could not address the numerous challenges confronting the education sector and, therefore, it was imperative for all stakeholders in education to make a concerted effort to partner the government in its quest to improve upon the quality of education in the country.
Mr Eugene Ofori-Atta, a Takoradi-based architect and an old student (1980), advised the students to take their studies seriously so that they could become great men in the future, adding that they had an advantage to study at the GSTS since all the necessary facilities were available for them to utilise.
The Secretary to the group, Mr Farouk Haruna, explained that even though members of the group were very busy individuals working in various capacities, they still had the welfare of the school at heart, hence the donation.
The school authorities expressed their profound gratitude and appreciation to the past students for the donation and expressed the hope that they would be back again with another package.
