The Chinese Embassy presented the students with $500 each. The students, studying Chinese as a liberal subject, excelled in the Chinese language examination.

The Dean of the Faculty of Arts of the UCC, Professor Dora Adu Buandoh, called on the Chinese Embassy to support the faculty to enhance the teaching of the subject. This, she explained, was because a number of students were becoming more interested in studying Chinese.

Support for lecturers

She called for support for lecturers teaching the language, saying for effective teaching of the language, the faculty would need at least two lecturers at any given time.

The Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Sun Baohong, who presented the prizes, said the support was another effort to further strengthen the relationship between China and Ghana. She noted that Ghana topped the list of countries with students self-financing their education in China now, while many more were studying on Chinese Government scholarship.

She pledged China's support to government's efforts to convert the country’s polytechnics into technical universities.

She stated that Chinese had become an important language and over 150 million people around the world were now learning Chinese.

The Pro-Vice Chancellor of UCC, Professor John Nelson Buah, said the study of the Chinese language was becoming attractive to more people and appealed for scholarship for lecturers to enable them to study the language.
