‘Vocational training not for school dropouts’

The Proprietress of Queenscraft School of Catering in Sekondi-Takoradi, Mrs Grace Anthony, has dismissed claims by some people that vocational training is for school dropouts.

She rather explained that vocational education helped improve the lives of the individual, as well as the family, adding that it was one of the best tools for a nation's development.

Mrs Anthony, who was addressing the 15th graduation ceremony of the school, announced that since the school was established in 1999, 1,650 students had been trained who were working on their own.

A total of 109 students, including three males, graduated in cookery, cake-making, decoration and design, flower, ribbon, balloon and fabric decoration.

The theme for the occasion was: "Improving the Quality of Life through Vocational Training."

Offering immediate solution

She said with the high rate of graduate unemployment currently, vocational, technical and other skills training programmes offered the immediate solution.

"We chose this theme because it seems many people have the notion that vocational schools are for dropouts. We want to let the public know that vocational education improves the lives of the individual and the family as well," Mrs Anthony emphasised.

She said the school did not only seek to train students academically but also to shape their entire lives. "We believe if you acquire skills training but you have a bad attitude, it will not work out well for you. We, therefore, strive to educate students to have positive attitudes to life and we also give financial assistance to them; Mrs Anthony said.

She urged the graduates to make use of the training acquired in the school in all their endeavours.
