Joe Mettle proposes gospel artistes awards separate from VGMA

According to him, the recognition given to gospel artistes as compared to artistes of secular music under the Ghana Music Awards was not enough.

Therefore he thinks that once the gospel fraternity was more united, they should push for their own award scheme.

In a radio interview on 3FM, he said there were more categories for secular music in the VGMA than gospel therefore insisted that gospel artistes need more recognition and encouragement to continue their work.

He also spoke about music promotion in Ghana, indicating that the frequent play of non-Ghanaian music on the airwaves was problematic and needs attention.

According to him, in other African countries there are strict laws governing how much foreign music receives airplay but there was no law like that in Ghana.

“When you go to South Africa, you get South African songs being played. You hardly hear Ghanaian songs being played on South Africa stations. “Ghanaian Gospel Artistes will have to go there to promote their songs,” he said.

Joe Mettle has been nominated for Gospel Artiste of the Year, Best Male Vocalist and Overall Artiste of the Year in this year’s Vodafone Ghana Music Awards, which is scheduled to be held on April 8, 2017.
