MTN Ghana in partnership with Huawei Technologies has launched a new mobile phone, Ascend Y220 in Ghana.
The move is to help increase the subscriber base of MTN as well as smartphone usage in Ghana.
The Ascend Y220 is one of the lowly priced 3G smartphones in the market. MTN is selling it at GHc150 under a 12-month deal of 65 minutes of voice calls per month and 200 MB of data per month.
Speaking at the official launch of the phone in Accra on Wednesday, Mr Radul De, Chief Marketing Officer of MTN Ghana said MTN already has about 47 percent of the data market share and it intends to increase it with the Ascend Y220 offer.
He said the first Huawei Y210 phone which was launched in June last year has been successful on the market and from the same category, the Huawei Y220 which is an advanced version has been introduced.
Mr Rahul De, noted that data service had become increasingly important to social and economic growth. However, the growth could not be achieved unless the consumer had the appropriate device to support and enhance the data experience.
According to him, MTN was excited to partner with Huawei to bring that experience to its subscribers in the country.
The Ascend Y220 handset comes with a 3.5 inch screen, Dual-core 1GHz processor, android operating system, long battery life and acts as a wi-fi hotspot for sharing internet with other devices.
Like other android phones, the Y220 is a touch-screen and has delightful innovation that makes apps easy to use.
The processor is manufactured with 28nm manufacturing technology, more precision, low power consumption and longer standby time.
The Managing Director of Huawei Technologies Ghana, Mr Russel Xu, said the product was an improvement of the Huawei Ascend Y210 and was aimed at providing a better technological experience for people accustomed to busy lifestyles away from their offices.
He expressed optimism that the phone would satisfy customers’ demand for quality services.
Huawei last year launched its branded Mediapad 7, Huawei Ascend p1, Huawei Honor and Huawei G302D, in Ghana.
