Federer crashes out at French open

Roger Federer's hopes of an 18th grand slam title are over after he suffered a shock fourth-round exit at the French Open with a five-set defeat to Ernests Gulbis.

Federer's run of reaching nine quarter-finals in a row at Roland Garros came to an end after three hours and 42 minutes on Court Philippe Chatrier, with Gulbis triumphing 6-7(5) 7-6(3) 6-2 4-6 6-3.
The first two sets went to tie breaks with Federer striking first before Gulbis levelled the match. Gulbis took the third in far more comfortable fashion, but Federer managed to force a decider.
However, Gulbis took an early break in the fifth and though Federer fought to the end he couldn't keep turn things around. Gulbis, who will next face Tomas Berdych after his straight sets win over John Isner, even apologised to a shellshocked crowd. “It was the biggest win of my career, I'm sorry for the crowd I had to win,” said Gulbis.
