Wollacott: Ghana goalkeeper's World Cup participation in doubt

Ghana international Jojo Wollacott faces a nervous wait over his participation in Ghana's World Cup party after the goalkeeper suffered an injury before Charlton’s 3-3 draw with Burton Albion yesterday.

Wollacott, 26, was withdrawn from Charlton's starting 11 after hurting his finger during the warm-up at the Pirelli Stadium.

The injury means Wollacott who was a sure bet to be in Coach Otto Addo's squad for the 2022 World Cup squad is now awaiting the results of a scan to confirm his availability.

Charlton manager Ben Garner all but confirmed that Wollacott would be named in Ghana's squad on Monday, adding that he was hopeful it would be a minor injury that will not rule out the shot-stopper from the Mundial.

“We’re praying for good news. He’s got a scan as soon as we get back to London. He just caught one on the end of his finger. We’re just hoping it’s a ligament or something like that. A little sprain in there," Garner said.

“We’re just praying for good news. He’s due to fly out tomorrow and join up with Ghana. Hopefully, we get good news. He’s a really level-headed guy, Jojo. He was disappointed before the game and frustrated by it. I don’t think he was in a position to be on the bench so we made the decision to put an extra outfield player on.

“He’s a little bit more positive in there now and we’re really hopeful it’s positive news and he can travel tomorrow.”
