We were the better team but... - Black Stars coach Chris Hughton explains Comoros loss

In the aftermath of Ghana's defeat against Comoros in the 2026 World Cup African qualifiers, Black Stars head coach Chris Hughton attributed the loss to a lack of sharpness in front of goal.

Despite the setback on matchday two in Moroni on Tuesday, November 21, Hughton, an Irish manager, expressed his belief that Ghana was the superior team for a significant portion of the match.

However, he noted that the team faltered in converting the chances that presented themselves during the game.

"Congratulations to Comoros for the victory. In my opinion, over the 90 minutes, we were the better team. I thought Ghana was the better team," remarked Hughton post-match. He acknowledged a conceded goal that the team deemed subpar and highlighted their inability to capitalize on scoring opportunities.

"This was not a game where Comoros won comfortably. Over the 90 minutes, we were the better team, but unfortunately, we were not able to put away the chances that we created."

Despite the defeat, the Black Stars failed to ascend to the top of Group I and remain at three points after two rounds of play. Looking forward, the team will redirect its focus to the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations scheduled for January 2024 in Ivory Coast.
