We are in for the job, not money - Banku, Powers claim

Two of Ghana's cruserweight boxers,  Brimah Kamoko, also known as Bukom Banku, and his long time pal, Ayitey Powers, have dispelled rumours among Kumasi fans that their 'repeat or revenge' fight on Boxing Day at the Baba Yara Stadium was just to make money and not to exhibit any great fight.

Banku told a press conference that the rumour could only gain currency if the purse was going to be shared, 'but this is a winner takes all; so it cannot be true. '

Fans in the Garden City remain divided over the competitiveness of the upcoming bout on Saturday after the sell-out first fight at the Accra Sports Stadium months ago, which was won by Banku on a unanimous points decision.

The winner of Saturday’s bout takes home GH¢100,000, a Range Rover vehicle and ticket for a holiday trip in South Africa.

Banku has predicted a fifth round knockout, while Powers, who was spotted in traditional hinge hair and a beautiful jacket, promised to end the fight by the eighth round.

Powers, in a rather calm composure, said despite the acrimony heralding the fight,  they still remained the best of friends, adding “if God knows that I have trained harder and deserve to win so be it, and vice versa.”

His soothing words touched Banku,  who had been on the rampage, verbally attacking everybody, including the promoters, Landmark Promotions.

“From today, I urge all my fans to stop attacking Ayitey because we still remain best of friends.  But I know the media understand this. It is done everywhere even in America just to sell the fight,” Banku confessed.

Saturday's fight, which is to be driven on the heels of entertainment, is being sponsored by Joy Industries,  producers of Joy Dadi bitters, and supported by Black Avenue Sports.

Shatta Wale,  who promised at the press conference to play a new song in honour of he winner, with Dr Black, Kwaw Kese, Sarkodie, Efya, are among a number of artistes billed to spice the night.

There will be seven under-cards on the night while ticket prices, which range from GH¢10 to GH¢100, go on sale today.
