Volleyball: El-Wak Stadium to host President’s Cup tourney

Three security services and three civilian teams (male and female) will compete for honours in the maiden President’s Cup volleyball championship which takes place at the El Wak Sports Stadium in Accra from March 3 – 5, 2023.

The Ghana Police, Air Force, Ghana Army and Ghana Immigration teams will engage Immanuel Presby, El Wak Wings and a club from the Eastern Region in a round-robin format for qualification spots in the semi-finals and the final.

A board member of the Ghana Volleyball Association, Kwadwo Fordjour, told the Daily Graphic that the competition was being organised in honour of the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, and also to commemorate Ghana’s independence anniversary.

Talent-hunt exercise

He added that the three-day tournament would enable the association to select new talents into the national team to prepare for an upcoming international competition.

“There is this upcoming special tournament in Benin that we are looking for new players to feature for the Black Spikers [national team], and we hope to recruit new talents into the team to represent Ghana at the tournament,” Mr Fordjour said.

New appointment

In another development, the Ghana Volleyball Association (GVA) has appointed Madam Vivien Nyoni a Principal Revenue Officer of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA)-Customs Division as the Punlic Relation officer of the Association.

Madam Nyoni who is also the president of the GRA Ladies Club and president of the Birifor Youth Association is an active volleyball player and follower.

She told the Daily Graphic in an interview in Accra yesterday, that, she will project the image of the sport based on her experience and promote the sport to the general public.

“I will also use my new position to educate and inform people that volleyball is a very lucrative sport and can be a good source of employment for the youth,” she told the Daily Graphic.

She further noted that she would encourage the youth to be interested in the sport to make it a national pastime.

A board member of the GVA who broke the news to the Daily Graphic Mr Bernard Mornah noted that the sport need a new face and someone who can attract corporate sponsorship hence the appointment.

“We want to take volleyball and beach volleyball to a new level and we want to relate well with the public to attract good sponsorship,” he stated.
