Vice-Chancellor’s Challenge Cup: Dept of Geological Engineering retains title

Defending champions, Department of Geological Engineering, beat the Department of Environment and Safety 6-5 on penalties to retain the seventh Vice-Chancellor’s Challenge Cup of the University of Mines and Technology at the UMaT Sports Centre, Tarkwa.

It was the first time in the history of the competition that a defending champion retained the trophy.

This year’s competition featured three female teams comprising Tarkwa Midwifery School, Faculty of Engineering (FoE) Ladies and Faculty of Mineral Resource Technology (FMRT) Ladies.

After an all-play-all competition between the ladies, the Tarkwa Midwifery won the day beating FoE Ladies 2-0 to take home the winner’s trophy, medals and a cash award.

The FoE Ladies received cash prize and medals.

Another interesting part of the competition was the staff/sponsors category which had a team from the Ghana Police Service, the junior staff of UMaT, the banks and the senior staff of UMaT competing for honours.

The junior staff defeated the bank side on penalties and took home a trophy and a cash prize.

Individual winners

Individual prizes were given to Amos Asante of the Department of Mechanical Engineering as the Top Scorer in the Male Students’ category, while Sufyn Mumin of the Department of Environmental and Safety Engineering won the Most Valuable Player award.

Mavis Hanson and Abigail Gyamfi of the Tarkwa Midwifery School won the awards for Most Valuable Player and Top Scorer (Female Students’ category), with Mr Isaac Dadzie of the Junior Staff team taking the award for Best Player (Staff/Sponsors category).

The Fair Play Team award went to the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

Addressing the participating teams, the Pro Vice Chancellor, Associate Prof. Victor Temeng, expressed his happiness for a successful competition and noted that it was an opportunity for them to create a shared space and experience and also to inculcate in them the values of selflessness, determination, endurance and patriotism.

He expressed his appreciation to the sponsors, Fidelity Bank, Access Bank, Ntico Construction and Ventures Limited, So Nice Drinking Water, and Ransbert Supplies.
