UMaT to host 10-km inter-university cross-country

University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), Tarkwa, will be hosting the 22nd Ghana Universities Sports Association (GUSA) inter-university cross-country competition in November, 2017.

The cross-country competition is one of the flagship programmes of GUSA. In this regard, a seven-member Local Organising Committee (LOC), chaired by Assoc. Prof Michael Affam, has been inaugurated to see to the planning and successful hosting of the event.

According to the LOC Chair, the competition would attract about 160 athletes from the GUSA member institutions, namely University of Ghana (UG), Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), University of Cape Coast (UCC), University of Education, Winneba (UEW), University for Development Studies (UDS), University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), and University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR).

He expressed optimism in hosting a successful event, considering that this will be the second time that UMaT will be hosting it in the competition’s history.The University Sports Coordinator, Mr Thomas Kwantwi, who is also a member of the LOC, said the competition, which would be governed by the International Athletics Association Federation (IAAF) rules, will see men and women competing for honours in a 10-kilometre race.

Mr Kwantwi added that each university team would present between eight and 10 competitors for both the men and women's race, and reiterated that any team that fails to raise eight competitors for each event may be allowed to compete on non-scoring basis. In all cases, only six of the competitors from each university with the best placements in the competition will be scored.
