Tennis: Na-Adjrago wins Ranking Tour Four

Ghana’s number one seed Wisdom Na-Adjrago proved his mettle last Friday as he thumped Kwabena Ofosu Bamfo 7-6, 7-6(2) to win the final of the 2017 National Ranking Tour Four before a sizable crowd at the tennis arena of the Accra Stadium.

The victory makes Na-Adjrago the third player to have won the ranking title back-to-back after George Darko (2015 National Ranking Tour One and Two) and Bernard Armaah Ashitey (2016 National Ranking Tour Five and Six).

The Koforidua-based player spent two hours and 55 minutes last Friday to intimidate Kwabena Ofosu Bamfo and record his second win over him this year.

Bamfo took an early lead, winning 4-2 after taking his serve twice but Na-Adjrago recovered his steam to close the gap to 3-4 and win his serve to level the scores. Each player took his serve six times to reach a tie-break at the end of the first set.

The final set also went to a tie-break which ended 7-6(2) in favour of Na-Adjrago.

The week-long tournament, organised by the Ghana Tennis Federation, saw Na-Adjrago defeat Emmanuel Nyan Plange 6-4, 6-3 in the quarter-final and wallop Benjamin Palm 7-5, 3-0 in the semi-final before crowning it with a win over Bamfo to take home GH¢400 and a giant trophy as his reward.

“I can’t lie and say I didn’t think about this game. Of course, it was at the back of my mind to win at all cost. Coming into the court, I knew that I had a chance to make history and that served as a great motivation for me”, Na-Adjrago said.

Bamfo, who also received GH¢200 for his efforts, thrashed Jonathan Quaye 6-4, 6-3 in the quarter-final, beat number two seed, Benjamin Fumi, 6-3, 7-5 in the semi-final, before meeting Na-Adjrago in the final.
