Taekwondo star off for Egypt Open

Ghana’s Selasi Damalie left Accra yesterday for Egypt to take part in the 4th Egypt Open Taekwondo Championship. The competition is the highest-ranked World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) open championships with a G2 rating.

The Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Taekwondo Federation (GTF), Adnan Lamptey, who briefed the Daily Graphic, said the GTF could not secure a flight for the seven-member team which was originally scheduled to participate in the championships, except Damalie who had sponsorship from the XTKD Taekwondo Foundation.

“Sponsorship delay and late visa application affected the team’s flight arrangements but Selasi, who will be fighting in the -63 weight category today, will arrive in the nick of time for registration,” Mr Lamptey stated.

In a related development, the president of the GTF, Frederick Lartey Otu, left for Luxor earlier in the week to participate in the championships as a referee.

Mr Lamptey said the GTF will in August organise the first WTF-ranked championships, dubbed first Ghana Open Taekwondo Championships in West Africa.

He appealed to the corporate world to support the federation, saying “the GTF is fervently seeking sponsorship to send Ghanaian athletes to other WTF-ranked open championships around the world”.

This, Mr Lamptey explained, is to prepare the athletes for the Ghana Open.
