Incumbent Frederick Lartey Otu was last Saturday re-elected for a third term as President of the Ghana Taekwondo Federation (GTF) after defeating former First Vice-President Charles Tsibo Cromwell at the 2026 GTF Elective Congress held at the Accra Sports Stadium.
He secured 16 votes to 11 to earn a fresh four-year mandate.
The election also saw Maxwell Theodore Alornyo elected Vice-President after polling 14 votes to beat Hamidu Abdel-Fatao (10) and Martin Prince Oppan (3).
In the Board Members’ election, Kankpenuba Peter N. Wisdom and Simon Koku Gluikpor were elected with 16 votes each, beating Stephen Amegashie (12) and Terrance Asare (10).
The election was supervised by a three-man committee chaired by Lawrence Osei-Boateng of Ghana Free Zones Authority, and Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) General Secretary Mohammed Muniru Kassim and Hussien Addy of the National Sports Authority (NSA) as members.
The GOC President, Richard Akpokavie, who swore the new leadership into office, hailed the GTF for a peaceful, transparent and unifying elective congress and hailed the delegates for resolving administrative gridlocks internally and maintaining order.
Otu’s latest victory marks his third elected term as GTF President. The Customs officer was first elected in 2013, but his administration was hampered by a prolonged legal dispute that stalled the federation’s operations until the case was officially discontinued in 2022.
Following the resolution of the matter, he was re-elected for a second term at the federation’s elective congress in Tema in August 2022.
With another four-year mandate secured, Otu has vowed to build on reforms aimed at strengthening governance, expanding grassroots participation, improving athlete development and enhancing Ghana’s competitiveness on the continental and international taekwondo stage.
Addressing delegates after his victory, Otu appealed for peace, unity and stability within the taekwondo fraternity, urging members to put the contest behind them and work together for the growth of the sport.
He also commended Cromwell for stepping forward to contest the presidency, pointing out that his decision reflects the growth of democracy within the federation.
“Today there are no winners or losers—Ghana Taekwondo is the winner. I thank the delegates for renewing their confidence in me, and I respect my opponent for offering members a choice,” Mr Otu said.
“My doors remain open, and I will lead an all-inclusive administration that welcomes every stakeholder willing to work for the progress of Ghana Taekwondo. Together, we can achieve far more than we can individually,” he said.
The GTF President further called on the media to continue supporting the federation through responsible reporting that promotes discipline, unity and the achievements of Ghanaian athletes.
