SWAG inaugurates Eastern Region branch

The Eastern regional branch of the Sports Writers’ Association of Ghana (SWAG) has been inaugurated in Koforidua, with a new leadership to steer the affairs of the infant regional body.

The inauguration brought about 50 sports writers and broadcasters from some major towns in the region, including Nkawkaw, Afram Plains, Somanya, Kade, Nsawam, Koforidua among others.

The launch which was held at the conference hall of Bedtime Hotel was conducted by the SWAG president, Mr Kwabena Yeboah, and members of the National Executive Council.

The National Executive Council, led by the SWAG president, inaugurated the association by announcing the new officers who will steer the affairs of the association for the next two years.

Vibrant media

The Eastern region which boasts a vibrant sports media from radio, television and print is the fifth biggest in the media landscape in Ghana with about 37 radio stations, four television stations with correspondents for the national newspapers and portals.

The interim Regional Executives of the Eastern Region branch have since been inducted into office and shall be chaired by Mr Kwaku Sarpong Sarkodie with Mr Eugene Kumi as his vice.

The rest of the interim ExCo include Mr Kwesi Baah Duodu as the Secretary, Mr Israel Osei Asante (Deputy Secretary), Mr Ferdinand Akuffo (Treasurer), Mr Kenneth Oliver and Mr Ben Akoto as Organiser and ExCo member, respectively.

The General Secretary of SWAG, Mr Charles Osei Asibey, hinted that SWAG would in the coming days and months move to inaugurate the Western and Northern regions in making sure all practicing sports journalists came under one umbrella.

SWAG, the umbrella body for sports journalists in the country, has been in existence for over 50 years and currently has inaugurated branches in Bono, Ashanti and the Volta regions.

SWAG is noted for honouring sports excellence annually through the SWAG Awards and the SWAG Cup which is often contested for by the top football clubs in Ghana.

The Eastern regional inauguration was graced by the Chief Executive of Ghana Free Zones Authority, Mr Michael Okyere Baafi, and the MCE for New Juabeng South, Mr Ike Apau Gyasi, and was supported by Joy Industries Ltd, Total 2 and Bedtime Hotel
