SWAG Cup to mark Nyemitei’s death

The Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) would this year mark the 20th anniversary of the passing of Henry Plange (H.P.) Nyemitei, one-time patron of the  association and former Deputy Managing Director of SIC Insurance, who passed on in 1993.

SWAG is currently holding discussions with the family of the late football administrator and SIC Insurance Company, headline sponsors of the annual H.P. Nyemitei-SWAG Cup, towards the organisation of a successful match in honour of Nyemitei, who succeeded Ohene Djan as the second chairman of the Ghana Football Association from 1960 to 1966.

Nyemitei was also a former chairman of Accra Hearts of Oak.

The SWAG Cup match, which has existed for the past 30 years, is expected to be honoured this year at the Accra Sports Stadium, with December 22 or December 29 as possible dates for the match to be played between two Premier League clubs.

Part of the proceeds of the annual challenge cup match is used to support activities of the SWAG as well as the two participating clubs.

SWAG President, Ackah Anthony, described this year’s match as significant as it would coincide with the 20th anniversary celebration of the demise of one of Ghana's foremost sports administrator, who, until his demise, was a strong supporter of SWAG.

He noted that efforts would be made to stage a match that befitted the status of the late Nyemitei and the positive image of the association.

SIC Insurance Company Limited has for the past 30 years remained the traditional sponsors of the annual event and is expected to play a key role in the organization of the 2013 match as the headline sponsor.
