Squash: Inaugural umpires course held ahead of 2023 African Games

The Ghana Squash Federation (GSF) in collaboration with the Squash Federation of Africa (SFA) last Saturday organised a one-day Umpires Course as part of efforts to train officials for the 2023 African Games.

Facilitated by SFA President and world-renowned experienced umpire, Dr Lucky Millo, the Level 1 Course saw over 30 potential umpires drawn from across the African continent being trained on the basics of officiating a squash match.

In an interview, the President of the GSF, Rev Richmond Quarcoo, who doubles as Secretary-General of the SFA, said he has overwhelmed by the numbers given that usually, most people were interested in being squash players or coaches and not umpires.

Rev Quarcoo said this signified that the sport was growing in popularity, adding that the Federation was excited that it had been included in the 2023 African Games programme.

He also expressed gratitude to the SAF and the World Squash Federation for making a strong case for the inclusion of the sport at the 2023 African Games.

He said currently there were over 43 squash courts in Ghana with 23 of them located in Accra.

Rev Quarcoo further disclosed that his outfit had lined up a series of local and international competitions to prepare the Ghanaian squash team for the African Games.
