In a demonstration of pure self-belief and unwavering ambition, Ghanaian fighter Saviour "Volta Tyson" Gad has boldly called out Mexican boxing superstar, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, maintaining a firm stance that he is good enough to take out the celebrated four-division world champ.
The Agbozume-born Gad, the World Alliance Boxing Association (WABA) Supreme Global Super Middleweight champion, asserted his urgent request with a huge dose of confidence and emphasised a massive upset should the seemingly impossible match-up miraculously materialise.
“I want to fight Canelo Alvarez, I want to fight him. I will stop him. If he makes it tough, he will last maybe six rounds, but not more. Unless I wasn’t born in the Volta Region,” he told the Graphic Sports.
“I don’t see the punches of those he keeps fighting; I dare him to try my power. I knock my opponents out very quickly, I sometimes even hold on (knocking opponents out) just to extend the fight and entertain the crowd,” he affirmed.
“I know who Canelo is and I know what I’m saying. I’ll let them know that I’m a typical Voltarian from Ghana. Canelo can never finish the rounds with me. I punch people to feel it inside the bone; they are always running from me in the ring,” he said.
Gad’s power and persistence were on display when he defeated countryman Elliasu Sulley in the seventh round to capture the WABA world title at Keta this past Easter.
It was stoppage number 13 of 13 career wins, with just a solitary defeat coming against Fataou Garadima Yacoubou of Benin in only his second pro fight in December 2020.
The President of WABA, Tanzanian Alfred Onesmo Ngowi, said Gad could even host the potential fight against Canelo in Ghana, depending on whether his promoters can cough up millions of dollars in purse money.
He insisted that it is not impossible to bring down the former undisputed super middleweight champion of the world.
“It can be arranged, we just brought Chris Byrd to Zambia, so we can bring anyone,” Mr Ngowi said from Lusaka.
“But I think Gad needs more fights. He should defend his title against tough boxers and possibly Americans or Mexicans. Two or three more fights, then he may be ready for a super fighter like Canelo,” the WABA chief noted.
