Rennes’ Alidu Seidu faces extended layoff after serious knee injury

Rennes and Ghana defender Alidu Seidu has been dealt a significant setback after rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during a Ligue 1 match against Lille.

The incident occurred in the 18th minute of Rennes' 1-0 loss on Sunday, leaving the 24-year-old in tears as he exited the field.

The French club confirmed the severity of the injury on Monday but did not specify the recovery timeline. However, such injuries typically require several months of rehabilitation, raising concerns that the 15-time capped Ghana international may miss the remainder of the season.

This injury comes as a major blow for Rennes, who are struggling in Ligue 1 under new coach Jorge Sampaoli. The Brittany-based side currently sits 15th on the league table, a mere point above the relegation zone, marking their lowest points tally at this stage of the season since 2002.

Seidu, known for his versatility and defensive tenacity, has been a vital part of both Rennes' backline and the Ghanaian national team.

His absence will add to the challenges faced by Rennes as they seek to turn their season around.

The club has yet to announce a replacement strategy or timeline for Seidu’s return. Meanwhile, fans and teammates alike have sent messages of support to the injured defender as he begins his road to recovery.
