Queens target more goals against Niger

In a desperate bid to get their WAFU Zone B women's tournament back on track, Ghana's Black Queens have targeted a goal harvest against Niger in their second group game this afternoon.

The Queens played well but lost 0-1 to hosts, Cote d'Ivoire, and with Burkina Faso also winning 5-1 against Niger in the opening

Group A game last Wednesday, it means the remaining matches should be must-wins for the Queens if they are to make it to the semi-finals.

Against Cote d'Ivoire, the technical team anticipated a difficult game and thus employed 4-2-3-1 formation to get the better of the Ivorians, but that did not work to perfection as it produced good play with no goals.

In view of that, Coach Mercy Tagoe-Quarcoo is likely to restrategise to get the needed goals.

At yesterday’s training session, apart from recovery, the Queens worked on long range shots and set-pieces ostensibly to get things right during the match.

Indeed, Mercy indicated that her target would be to go for goals as that is the only way to get their campaign back on track.

"Given that we lost our first game, we have no choice but to win convincingly in the remaining games. Niger first, and then Burkina Faso.”

"From the look of things goals will be the eventual determinant of the two to advance from Group A and we very much want to be one of them,” she told the Graphic Sports.

Apart from goals, it is likely the Queens could see some changes in selection, as well as roles of some players.

"We will have a review of our game before settling on the starting line-up against Niger. Whatever it is, we will deploy a strategy that will get us a very good win," Tagoe-Quarcoo indicated.

From the look of things, her starting line-up could be: Patricia Mantey, Janet Egyir, Ellen Coleman, Faustina Ampah, Philicity Asuako, Gladys Amfobea, Grace Asantewaa, Alice Kusi, Priscilla Okyere, Portia Boakye and Rita Okyere.
