The 2026 edition of PRURide has received a major boost from Ghana’s road-safety authorities, with the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) and the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) calling for greater respect and protection for cyclists on the country’s roads.
Speaking at the launch, National Director of Operations of the MTTD, ACP Dr Samuel Sasu Mensah, said the Ghana Police Service was ready to work with PRURide organisers to improve the safety of cyclists and promote responsible road use.
“PRURide is not just about convenience; it is also about dignity and safety. MTTD stands ready to partner with PRURide to make Accra a model city for safe commercial riding,” he said.
Greater Accra Regional Director of the NRSA, Mr Joshua Quist, also urged motorists and other road users to change their attitude towards cyclists, stressing that cyclists deserve equal consideration on the road.
“Let’s respect cyclists as road users, not obstacles,” Mr Quist said, emphasising that road safety requires a mindset that recognises cyclists as fellow travellers with an equal claim to the road.
PRURide has evolved beyond a cycling event into a platform for promoting cycling, road safety and a greener environment, while encouraging greater acceptance of cyclists on Accra’s roads.
The 2026 initiative has brought together the Ghana Cycling Federation, Ghana Olympic Committee, Ghana Police Service, NRSA, National Sports Authority, University of Ghana Sports and Wellness Directorate and RITE Sports Services, among other partners.
Launched in 2019, PRURide has grown from 200 cyclists to about 400 in 2025. Solomon Tagoe won last year’s men’s elite race, while Mary Samuel claimed the women’s title. Organisers expect increased participation, especially students, for the seventh edition.
The initiative is backed by Prudential Life Insurance Ghana, and will feature a 30 km Fun Ride at the University of Ghana this Saturday, August 22, ahead of the PRURide Elite Race (112km for men and 67.2km for women) on September 6 at the Borteyman Highway.
