Promoters engage Tamale stakeholders ahead of Northern Rumble launch

SP Sport Management & Promotions has stepped up stakeholder engagement in Tamale ahead of Saturday’s official launch of its “Northern Rumble” – Farmers’ Day Edition, as the promoter pushes to take professional boxing beyond Accra.

The outfit paid a courtesy call on the Nyohan Dana, Chief of the Nyohan community, as part of efforts to build local support for the event, scheduled for December 5 at the Aliu Mahama  Sports Stadium.

SP Sport was represented by Chief Executive Officer Samuel Agyei Darkwah, Project Coordinator Latif Nii Sai, Head of Logistics George Opoku and team representative Sam Nana Gold.

The delegation was accompanied by Ishmail Baako, Chairman of the Northern Regional Boxing Association, and Coach Waliwu Alhassan, Head Trainer of the Northern Boxing Club.

The engagement aligns with SP Sport’s broader ambition to make boxing a nationwide sport rather than one concentrated in Accra. Following its maiden regional promotion, the 1957 Boxing Night in Koforidua in March, the company is targeting regular fight nights in Tamale and other regional capitals.

Darkwah has indicated that the company hopes to stage two or three promotions annually in Tamale, providing opportunities for boxers from the region’s estimated seven to eight boxing gyms to compete professionally and progress towards championship contention. Bono, Kumasi, Cape Coast and Takoradi are also being considered for future events.

“We want to promote boxers in the Northern Region and have more promotions around the country — spread boxing everywhere,” Darkwah told Graphic Sports.

“It’s a nationwide sport, not just for Accra. We are trying every possible means to take the sport across the country.”

He said Northern Rumble would also connect sport with youth empowerment and the celebration of farmers, with the main event taking place a day after the national Farmers’ Day celebrations.

“Northern Rumble is more than a boxing event — it is a platform for youth empowerment, sporting development, and the celebration of our hardworking farmers,” he said.

Saturday’s launch at the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium will begin the countdown to the December showdown, which organisers hope will open a new chapter for professional boxing in northern Ghana.
