Prisons Ladies win Sanford Women’s FA Cup
Prisons Ladies have won their first silverware in women’s football, the Sanford Women’s FA Cup trophy after beating rivals,Police Ladies, 1-0 in this year’s final played at the Cape Coast Stadium last Saturday.

An early goal from Slyvia Akosua Amankwah was enough to help Prisons ladies snatch the title from the holders,Police Ladies, as well as help them avenge the losses they had suffered at their rivals hands.
On a weekend of FA Cup finals,Prisons Ladies made sure they captured the spotlight and headlines and stole the show from Police with almost all the top officers in their establishments present.
The Inspector General of Police,David Asante Appeatu, led a highpowered delegation from the Police Service to support their side, while Mrs Patience Baffoe Bonnie, a Deputy Director General of the Prisons Service,also led a very strong and vibrant team.
In the end, it was the Prisons who, won both on and off the pitch, Amankwah’s goal delivering the trophy and their fans making the atmosphere very lively.
Indeed, the Sunyani-based team looked more hungry and right from kick-off launched an attack, the result producing a surprise early goal, the first in the history of the Sanford FA Cup.
She created the goal out of nothing,scoring in the second minute of the game,when she controlled the ball and targetted the near post which beat goalkeeper Nana Ama Asantewaa to send their vociferous fans into celebration.
Police had numerous chances to equalise and even add to the tally, but it simply was not their day as they missed chance upon chance, including a 90th minute opportunity to tap into an empty net but the ball refused to enter as it rather rolled past the edge of the line.
It force the Prisons bench to literally hold their breath until the final whistle from Referee Theresa Bremansu.
For helping her side to claim their first silverware, Amankwah was adjudged the Best Player of the competition, Ampem Darkoa’s Princella Adubea won the Top Scorer award for scoring six goals in the competition, while LadyStrikers’ Suzzy Dede Teye won the Discovery of the Competition award.
The Sanford Women’s FA Cup was sponsored by Sanford World Clinics who provided the financial support for the competition which had GH¢10,000, a trophy and gold medals at stake for the champions and GH¢8,000 and silver medals for the runners-up. The individual award winners also received trophies and cash prizes.
