Prez Kufuor commends Appiah

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has commended ex-Black Stars captain Stephen Appiah and former English Premier League stars Sol Campbell and George Boateng, for their initiatives in organising a Unity Match aimed at promoting peace as the nation holds its Presidential and Parliamentary Elections on November 7 this year.

President Kufuor lauded the trio yesterday morning when they paid him a courtesy visit to brief him on the preparations for the event ahead of the official launch billed as a two-legged football match slated for June 8 and June 11, 2016.

“Stephen is, indeed, my son and I celebrate him always for his leadership. So, I am not surprised he has succeeded in putting together a team like you  with the objective of maintaining peace and unity in the election year of our country,” former President Kufuor stated.

Stressing, he said “This is the year we select a new President and also a Legislature and you know politics arouses passion and tension too much at times, which can easily lead to untoward situations, and typically of Steve, he is extending soccer to promote peace”.

The former President added that “The icing on the cake is that he has come with stars like Sol Campbell and George Boateng, who we welcome back as a prodigal son who is coming to help secure peace and unity in his nation of birth. Soccer is a unifier and can promote peace at home and abroad”.

Appiah, Boateng and Campbell later in separate addresses, expressed gratitude to the former President for his support, pledging to give their all to ensure that peace was maintained in the country this year.

The trio later visited the British High Commission where they also briefed the High Commissioner, Jon Benjamin, on arrangements for the game.

Mr Benjamin noted that the role of the sports icons, who have massive followers, was key in maintaining peace across the world.
